Rehabaid consists of the main Rehabaid
Centre, which primarily provides services for adults, Rotary Rehabaid Centre
for Children, which provides childrenˇ¦s
services, and the Mobile Rehabaid Centre. Rehabaid was initially part of the
Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation, but was independently incorporated as
Rehabaid Society with effect from 11th August 1992. Rehabaid Centre joined
the HA in 1991, whereas Rotary Rehabaid joined the HA in 1994. The HA is a
funding and management organization which came into being in December, 1991.
It includes ex-government and government subvented hospitals and other organizations.
Rehabaid Centre was established
as a community resource centre in 1979, but over the past 25 years has subsequently
evolved and developed into a specialised
rehabilitation centre. Its information services include a permanent exhibition
of rehabilitation equipment, and professional advice from therapists in response
to telephone, mail or personal enquiries concerning equipment and services
for people with disabilities. Educational services include publications and
workshop organization. Rehabaid therapists also work directly with clients,
assessing and training them so that they may acquire independent living skills.
Clinical specialty services include Computer Access, Wheelchair Assessment
and Training, Back Care, Pressure Care, Driver Rehabilitation, Sexual Rehabilitation,
Cognitive Rehabilitation, Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and a Specialty
Service for Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder. Other services
include a Rehabilitation Equipment Loan Scheme and the Technical Aids Donation
Scheme (for people with disabilities), and the Technical Aid Assessment Loan
Scheme (for health care professionals).
In addition to the above areas of activity, Rehabaid also provides an Environmental
Advisory Service, established in October, 1981. The service is staffed by architectural
professionals. The Environmental Advisory Service gives advice on the design
and modification of buildings, urban services and amenities, so as to allow
access by disabled people.
Rehabaid expanded with the opening of the Rotary Rehabaid Centre for Children
in 1984. This Centre is focused on children, and also provides a permanent
exhibition of technical aids, with assessment, treatment and education carried
out by occupational therapists. In addition, Rotary Rehabaid includes a special
Toy Library which is open to the public, but particularly aimed at children
with disabilities. Toy Library members receive assessment and advice on toy
selection from our therapists.
