| Living with a disability or chronic illness is usually stressful for both the affected persons and their significant others. However, stress does not always result in negative outcomes. In fact, many people have successfullt turned disabilities or chronic illnesses into an impetus to motivate them to develop personal potentials, make deeper commitments in intimate relationship and appreciate the higher values of life.
Positive growth following disabilities or chronic illnesses is found to correlate with fewer psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, or social isolation. Posttraumatic growth also contributes to reducing self-neglect and preventing physical complications.
Coping counselling enables clients to focus on individual dignity, rights and potentials so that they can learn effective ways of coping with stress and attain personal and interpersonal growths.
