This service provides in-depth evaluation of people with disabilities to determine their capacity to drive a private car, and, in collaboration with driving instructors, offers a specialized driver training programme to promote driver safety, independence and competence. Occupational therapists conduct a comprehensive off-road assessment of the client's physical, visual, cognitive and perceptual abilities, their reaction times, functional mobility and knowledge of road rules. This is followed by an on-road assessment conducted jointly with a driving instructor in a dual-brake vehicle. We then issue a report and recommendation on the clientˇ¦s fitness to drive, along with a prescription of appropriate vehicle modifications and a remedial programme to improve the client's physical capacity to drive. We accept referrals from the Transport Department, medical practitioners, health care professionals, lawyers, and insurance companies.
